PACNUT™
ITW CIP PACNUT™ is a line of laminated lock nuts designed to internally deflect as torque is applied. A bolted joint remains tight by creating joint “preload” that is greater than the external application load of the joint. Preload is normally created by the stretch of the bolt and compression of the jointed components. Solid nuts or two piece flange nuts do little to add to the joint preload. The PACNUT™ using Belleville washer technology creates additional preload by allowing the laminated washers to compress. This additional preload then acts to reduce loss of tension within the joint from settling, excess paint, dirt, corrosion, surface imperfections, heat expansion/contraction and vibration.
PACNUT™ technology also allows for lock nut capability. The deflection of the laminated washers in the nut result in a reduction of hole size or pitch diameter that can be developed to control the designed clearance between the nut and bolt. This feature also produces mechanical pressure to the flanks of the treads on both the nut and bolt. The spring pressure and mechanical interference result in a locking mechanism that resists loosening.
- SPRING PRELOAD MAINTENANCE
Belleville washers are designed to function within a bolt's stretch or elastic range, adding to the joint's ability to maintain preload.
- TENSION INDICATOR
When a PACNUT™ has been tightened to the recommended load, a measurable clearance appears between the top lamination and the tab of the cage.
- LOCKING CHARACTERISTICS
PACNUT™ can be designed to perform any of the following:
- Free spinning “ON” – spring preload maintenance – free spinning “OFF.”
- Free Spinning “ON” – spring preload maintenance – prevailing torque “OFF.”
- Prevailing torque “ON” – spring preload maintenance – prevailing torque "OFF."
- THRUST WASHER
PACNUT™ can be designed to include the load bearing washer as an integral part of the nut to eliminate loose washers, reducing inventory and labor.
- DESIGN FLEXIBILITY
By changing the dimension parameters of PACNUT™, the amount of spring preload maintenance can be “fine tuned” to an individual application.
